Forestry Key Points

Students should be able to:

  1. Understand the principles of forest ecology, including the interactions between forest plants, soils, wildlife, hydrology, topography, fire, climate and succession.
  2. Describe the physiology of trees and identify the components of a tree’s structure.
  3. Understand the various types of silvicultural management systems and the advantages and disadvantages of each.
  4. Evaluate a forested area for timber volume, potential products and overall management system, and then recommend the appropriate land use (saw timber, firewood, recreation, wildlife, etc).
  5. Explain the social and political aspects of forestry, the influence forestry has on people’s daily lives, including an awareness of the differing viewpoints common in forestry issues.
  6. Understand the specific application of forestry in Oklahoma, i.e. where forestry is practiced in Oklahoma, what type of management is utilized in Oklahoma and for what species, what contribution forestry makes to Oklahoma’s economy, etc.
  7. Identify the forest types of Oklahoma and the tree and shrub species common to each.
  8. Understand forestry’s application in cities and towns.  For example, what is urban forestry, what special benefits and challenges are faced with urban forestry (ecological, social, political, economic), how does urban forestry differ from traditional rural forestry.
