Envirothon Forestry Tips and Questions

 

This year’s competition will be held near Wagoner, Oklahoma, in the eastern part of the state.  All tree identification will take place using live, native trees on the site.  This means you won’t need to identify trees not naturally occurring in eastern Oklahoma.

 

Oklahoma’s forest industry is continually adjusting to market changes.  Be sure you know where and what kind of commercially significant timber we grow.

 

Forests are the setting for many biotic and abiotic interactions involving plants and animals.  Make sure you know how silvicultural practices that are or have been common to eastern Oklahoma affect forest ecosystems and these interactions.

 

Question of the day - How tall is a log?

"How much wood would a woodchuck chuck if a woodchuck could chuck wood?  More importantly, how much wood was in the tree the woodchuck chucked?  Make sure that in addition to being able to measure trees accurately that you can also determine volume."
