A High School Environmental Competition
to Educate and Challenge Young People.
THE OKLAHOMA 2008 ENVIROTHON COMPETITION TOOK PLACE AT
CAMP Y-SHUA ON APRIL 7-9TH.
Wednesday’s rain showers put a wet end to an otherwise
perfect Envirothon. Forty high school students representing eight schools
participated in this year’s state competition. Camp Y-Shua nestled in the
Wichita Mountains near Lawton provided the setting and testing materials
for all the Envirothon topics; soils, wildlife, aquatics, and forestry as
well as the special topic that discussed the positive and negative effects
of recreation on our natural resources.
The team from Lawton lead the other teams taking the overall best scores
on wildlife, aquatics, forestry, and the special topic which helped them
place first in the all around competition. Their first place finish allows
them to attend the Canon Envirothon in Flagstaff, Arizona on July 28th.
Edmond North took second place overall as well as taking best score awards
in soils and the oral presentation section on the competition. Edmond will
have the responsibility of participating in the Canon Envirothon if Lawton
is unable to attend. Fairland High was the highest placing FFA team this
year at Envirothon which gives them the honor of attending the national
FFA competition in Indianapolis, Indiana.
The steering committee of the Oklahoma Envirothon would like to thank all
of the student’s advisors that have spent long days and many hours
educating the participating students. A vital part of allowing the
Envirothon competition to run smoothly is our walking leaders and judges
from conservation districts and other natural resource offices all around
Oklahoma. The cooperative effort from the students, advisors, and
volunteers helped make the 2008 Oklahoma Envirothon a success.
